Aim of the Festival

Since 2005 the Shortfilmfestival of Bolzano, Italy, has a section dedicated to the experimental films. Initially they were shown on installations and during exhibitions highly appreciated by the audience. This year ShortFilmExperimet is also a competition with its own money-prize.

Jean Mitry in a famous dissertation about the story of the Experimental Cinema defines the Experimental Cinema as the essence of the Cinema itself, like something that is in constant evolution: what is today only a formless figure becomes tomorrow a complete work.

What is Experimental Cinema?

This concept highlights one of the most important aspects of experimenting in films: the attitude to innovation, the courage of discovering new paths, the smart use of different medias in order to go further from the basic language of films. What is new scares us, especially when we compare it to the tradition. For this reason we want to guarantee, like we did in the previous years, a special space dedicated to experimental films. Following the actual trend of many international film festivals, we want to create a real competitive laboratory also for reminding that the cinema itself has always represented innovation and research of new expressions. What is Experimental Cinema? There is not a clear answer to this question because this genre has taken distances from the traditional rules. Only the jury and the audience can decide it.
